Keyshawn Johnson: Not Half Bad

OK. Below are Keyshawn Johnson's career stats. Mull them over for awhile, not thinking about the man, just looking at the numbers.

For some reason, there's been a "good riddance" vibe about Johnson's exit from the NFL, but he's been a charismatic and excellent player.

Hall of Famer? Probably not. The numbers aren't
overwhelming, plus he only made three Pro Bowls
and got bounced from New York, Tampa, Dallas
and Carolina.

But Keyshawn might be one of the best pure possession
receivers of all time. He didn't have the speed for 50-yard TDs,
but he was incredibly consistent. Marking him down
for 70 grabs and 900-1110 yards a year for a solid decade is
nothing to sneeze at.

His career numbers are more like those of a great
tight end -- in fact, they are almost exactly the same
as Tony Gonzalez's (sure-fire Hall of Famer)

Of course, Keyshawn wasn't a tight end (although he was
an excellent blocker), so he's probably going to be
viewed as a good-not-great No. 1 overall pick. But
he had a catch in every one of his 167 games, he's
15th all time in yards and 23rd in catches.

He led the Jets to an AFC title game, and was a key cog
on the Bucs' Super Bowl team. And after his rookie season,
he never played for a really terrible team.

In seven playoff games, his worst performance was
decent: three catches for 40 yards and a TD.
He averaged 5.5 catches for 81 yards in those
seven games, four of them wins.

He was clearly a guy who was too outspoken for his
own good -- had his ego been smaller, he might
have stuck around for a long time in this league.
But he wanted to be the star, and he mostly deserved to be.

Throw him the damn ball?

Wasn't such a bad idea.

From the Dallas Morning News: New Cowboys offensive lineman Leonard Davis (recently acquired from Arizona) used his John Deere the other day to pull a trapped horse out of the mud. The picture is priceless.

Retro look for Steelers
This story is a couple weeks old, but comes to us from the bad-timing department. The Steelers are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year with new uniforms, a new mascot and a fan-voted 75th anniversary all-time team.

But unless you live in Pittsburgh, you haven't heard about it.

There's a reason why: the organization made the announcement the Friday before the draft, when football fans had other things on their mind. They would have made a bigger splash if they made the announcement oh, I don't know, today, with nothing of note going on in the football world.

They most definitely hate the Patriots
There’s a new blog out there devoted to a passionate hatred of the Patriots. The name says it all: I-Hate-The-New-England-Patriots.blogspot.com.

It looks like it’s run by N.Y. Jets fans, but it's reaching out to all those united by a single common bond: an intense hatred of the Patriots (check out the very funny May 3 post, “Why We Hate”). The site’s pretty clever and an entertaining read.

New uniforms for Boise State
The Broncos pulled off a win for the ages in January, in one of the great televised sporting events ever. So they enter the 2007 season as a new media darling … and with new uniforms. The change is not quite as dramatic as Pittsburgh’s. Now, if they’d only get rid of that obnoxious blue field.

The best QB you don't know
The blog Carson’s Corner has a look at the incredibly productive but incredibly low-wattage quarterback Marc Bulger of St. Louis. Blogger Brian Carson offers up some nifty Cold, Hard Football Facts in his piece about Bulger, long a CHFF favorite, but misses the big one: the anonymous Bulger has the fifth best passer rating in NFL history! Interestingly, we took a look at the most consistent QBs in football two years ago, and Bulger topped the list.

Philly Inquirer columnist Don McKee reports that it’s a possibility.

Another story out of Philly: columnist Bill Conlin chimes in with an interesting little statistical look at the historic futility of the Phillies as they approach the 10,000-loss milestone in franchise history. They’d need to go 162-0 for seven straight seasons, and 59-0 in the eighth, to reach .500 as a franchise. The Phillies were founded in 1883, making them one of the oldest franchises in North American sports. They have just one World Series championship to show for it (1980).

Philly Sucks
You think your sports teams suck? It could be worse. You could live in Philly. One Philadelphia sports fan has an entire site devoted to the sports teams in his city, “where suckage is a way of life.”

According to the ticker on Philly Sucks.com, it’s been 8755 days+ since a Philadelphia sports team last won a major sports title. That’s nearly 24 years for those of you keeping score at home (Sixers in 1983).

File this under the "Painting with Broad Brush Strokes" category.

I spend a lot of time with serious foodies ... most are cool. And chefs are the coolest. They just like to eat and drink good stuff ... whatever it is. Almost all of them are pretty down to earth and just dig it when people love their food.

But wine people ... serious wine people (you know the type), almost all are pretentious d-bags. Which is one of the many reasons I like beer better ... beer people are definitely much cooler than wine people.

I witnessed Exhibit 4,789 the other night. I was going over a friend's house for dinner. He had spent the day slow-smoking ribs for his friends and family ... mother, siblings, kids, everyone (using our rib dry rub in the process, too). He asked me to bring over a bottle of chianti. So I go to the local "packy" (in Boston parlance) and check out the Italian wines. There's about six different chiantis in one area. I ask the manager, very innocenty, "are these all your chiantis?" Six seemed like slim pickings.

You would have thought I insulted his children.

"Are you kidding?," he said, all snot-nosed and pretentious like. "We have the best selection of chianti on the South Shore."

Serious dick-a-tude on this dude, like I'm some piece o' shit.

All I wanted was a bottle of wine, and wanted to know if there were other chiantis in the store. This guy cops a royal "I am better than all the little people" attitude.

I grabbed the first bottle on display and headed out, reminded of yet another reason why I (and the vast majority of Americans) don't drink wine: you find yourself surrounded by Grade A dickheads when you do.

Remember, wine drinkers spit. Beer drinkers swallow.

For years, those with the sanity to question the religious zealots in the global warming community have pointed to the fact that the sun itself is actually in a warm period and that other planets are getting warmer, too.

Even the European media establishment has taken a break from bashing the Unitd States to publish a piece about global warming on Mars: check out this piece in the Times of London.

It seems that the ice cap on Mars is in danger of melting, too. Last I checked, the evil US capitalist responsible for global warming on earth was not running things on Mars.

Nobody eats meat as prodigiously, or as proudly, as the Cold, Hard Football Facts crew.

If it bleeds it leads at our tailgates.

But not everyone feels the same. Check out this story from, where else, San Francisco. This woman used to eat meat, but now that she's a vegetarian the smell (not even the taste) of meat makes her gag. I think that's what you'd call a psycho-somatic reaction. It's all in her head, in other words.

And - in typical freak fashion - her miserable lifestyle choices make those around her miserable too.

Funny about Greenland. It's about to disappear as we know it ... yet I was in Maine last week and the Kennebec River was still frozen solid from Bingham on up.

(Conveniently, the article put no timeframe on the epic upcoming meltdown of Greenland ... but baced on the pace of the Kennebec ice melt, I'm guessing in about 1 million years ... long after a meteor has already destroyed human life anyway.)

Of course, at the end of the article you find a scientist begging for money to continue investigating the problem.

But I look at it this way: if man-made global warming has already been proven a fact, why are we spending any more money on it? That'd be like spending money to study the existence of gravity.

The girl pictured at right is my favorite, found on some random web excursion a couple of years ago.

It's apropos of nothing, but always worth a smile.

So .... speaking of chicks, my wife (not pictured, but also cute when eating toast) is having our first child any day now. Cray-zee shit. I'm 36, my wife's 36, we've been married for 11 years, yet it seems like we're just barely ready for this. I guess you're never ready.

I try not to think about it all too much, because I don't want to ruin the surprise of what it's actually like to be a parent. But I do kind of take peeks into the future.

I worry about my ability to teach him things. Like football, for example. I want him to grow up with an appreciation of sports, and be a football fan -- but he might not give a shit. I guess some of it depends on the kid and some of it depends on how you try to drum it into them.

My friend Spooch loves wrestling, as much as a 33-year-old man can, but his 7-year-old son is absolutely fuckin' NUTS for wrestling. He is a wrestling savant -- can name all the WWE guys, spell their names to a T, even the tough ones, knows their music, their costumes. Everything. But another friend -- whose wife loves football as much as he does, and loudly -- his kids could give a shit about football.

That must be tough, but I guess that's something I have to prepare myself for. I put people through it when I was a kid. No one in my family liked sports at all, but I obsessed on them. So they just got out of my way and let me compile my fake stats and make weird lists. Still doing it.

My grandfather, who was more like a dad to me growing up, loved cars. At one point in the 50s he collected three Porsche Speedsters, one of which he owned for more than thirty years. But I never cared about cars like he did -- I loved riding in cars, but I didn't have any real interest in them. In the last few years of his life, my grandfather talked a lot about cars -- even as he softened with age, they still fascinated him. By then, I saw them through his eyes, and still try to.

Anyhoo .... hope you enjoyed the girl, and the ramblings, and anyone with any tips on fatherhood, I'd love to hear them.

Cassettes: I Hardly Knew Ye

Where the hell did all my cassettes go?

Are they still out there somewhere? Is somebody, at this very minute, carefully inserting my old copy of Wham's "Make it Big" into their boombox and dancing about willy nilly in an oversized neon T-shirt?

I hope not.

In this high-tech world of ours, it's hard to believe that anyone still has a soft spot for tapes. They're still sold, but they cost just as much as CDs — so obviously, only fetishists continue clinging to their fading plastic allure.

After all, we've come so far. Yogurt comes with a built-in spoon now, and I guess they're cloning babies, too!

When wonders like this are possible, the idea of listening to "The Very Best of Cream" on a worn-out cassette seems downright sacriligious. I enjoy the song "Born Under a Bad Sign" as much as the next guy, but do you think I'm going to waste precious seconds fast-forwarding through less-popular Cream favorites just to hear the one I'm looking for?

Not likely, friend. I've got things to do, you know?

Let's face it, tapes were a bad idea. They never sounded as good as LPs (if you're still in high school, just nod and pretend you know what LPs are), they wore out fast, and they had an awful tendency to get permanently stuck in the tape player. There was no worse feeling than getting your favorite tape caught in your car's player; after an hour of digging, your fingers would end up bloody and bruised, and you were no closer to hearing "Led Zeppelin III" blasting from the back-seat speakers.

Compact discs are superior to tapes in the same way that peace is superior to war. If we knew CDs were coming, we could have stuck with records and 8-tracks and used tapes for their only legitimate function: to record childish skits, singalongs and episodes of "Dukes of Hazzard."

Now those tapes, I wish I had. I made hundreds of my own tapes over the years, mix-tapes for road trips, random snippets from everyday life, my own songs, comedy bits — all meticulously labeled in my bad handwriting on the little foldout inserts. But these cassettes are all gone, long gone, as if they never existed in the first place.

As far as I can tell, tapes were really only the No. 1 option for eight years or so, from 1981 to 1988. This era is usually referred to as "The Reagan Years," but I see no reason why it can't be referred to as "The Memorex C-60 Years." During these years, I saved all my spare cash so as to buy the newest cassette releases by The Fat Boys and Eurythmics. Now that's good money management.

I was big on "cassingles," too. Cassingles were good when you weren't sold on a new artist's ability to deliver two full sides of quality. Many times, these plastic one-hit wonders got tossed out of car windows after one listen, or placed under the front tire of the school bus. Cassettes were made to be thrown away. They had a cool sound when you threw them through the air, a whirring of some sort. I can't really explain the sound, but I would definitely recognize it if someone threw a tape at me when my eyes were closed.

Still, I have to wonder where the majority of my good cassettes wound up. I don't believe these would have naturally biodegraded yet, and I'm almost certain I didn't recycle them. I probably sold a bunch of them, or just gave them away.

I'm sure some of them found homes, but most of them probably just got tossed. They're probably all huddled together as we speak, slowly fading away at the bottom of some God-forsaken landfill in the middle of New Jersey somewhere, right between an six-pack of Dr. Pepper cans and a Rubik's Cube.

Godspeed, tapes. May you find a home.

I think I'd be happy enough with just five channels on my cable dial, especially if it cost less than $100 a month or whatever the hell I pay.

1. ESPN. Yeah, it's standard, but what are you gonna do? ESPN is like salt and pepper -- you take it for granted, but you'd be lost without it.

2. NFL Network. Another no-brainer. Today, it's an eight-hour marathon of NFL Films outtakes. What on TV would be better than that?

3. FOX. Here's my rationale: I'd get whatever local news I need, plus Family Guy, American Idol and NFC football games.

4. Game Show Network. My wife and I have to watch something together, plus Richard Dawson.

5. NBC. I'll take Sunday night football, plus The Office and E/R, over AFC football and crap on CBS. It's a tough call though.

Note: We're having our first baby in a month, so soon my five channels will probably have to include something that involves "Sesame Street." Fuckin' kids.

March Madness

I used to be the biggest college hoops fan on the planet. This was back in 1987, when I was a junior in high school -- I could have named the starting five for literally every team in Division 1, right down to Cleveland State.

Now, I can name three players -- Greg Oden, Kevin Durant and Stefan Curry of Davidson.

Who is Stefan Curry? Well, my all-time favorite athlete is Dell Curry, who was a shooting guard for the Hornets in the 1980s and 90s. Why? I'm not sure. I adopted him when I was 14, and my email address as a 36-year-old is dellcurry@comcast.net. I have a mini Starting Lineup figure of him on top my computer, a signed photo on the wall. His college jersey in my closet. His game-worn shoes.

It's a sickness.

Anyhoo, it happens that Dell's son Stefan is tearing it up as a freshman at Davidson, averaging over 20 points a game and shooting threes like his daddy. Despite my years of stalking Dell Curry, I didn't hear about his son until recently.

It's pretty exciting to have a team to root for now -- I don't have an alma mater, and none of the big schools do it for me. I root for my old favorite, Va. Tech, Xavier, Oklahoma, but now I'm all Davidson all the time.

Unfortunately, their nickname is Wildcats, which should be permanently retired as a nickname. But that's ok.

I don't know why this caught my eye, but it did.

Reading an ESPN bit on Randy Moss to Tampa rumors (a possibility, I guess). some reader left the following comment: "It wont really matter if the BUcs dont have a QB. Simms is the worst QB to ever play the game. H can thank his dad for getting him the job."

Hmm. Now, I know we unwashed masses are collectively Time's defending Person of the Year for our media-producing efforts, but ...

This post for some reason confirmed something in my own mind: most people still don't know shit. Or how to type a coherent sentence.

Do people really think Phil Simms is so powerful that he can get his son to start in the NFL? Then why isn't Bill Gates' son in the NFL? And that Simms is really that terrible? Nah, I think people just love to open their mouths and let the excrement pour loose. When you don't have anything to say, say that something sucks and give a random reason why.

Of course, no one that would read CHFF would be so crass.

Jamal Lewis in French: le terrible

Jamal Lewis fits the profile of the over-the-hill running back, following the same career path of so many before him. A promising start, a rapid decline.

One problem. He's only 27.

How is that possible? Lewis has been around forever, and he certainly ran like a member of the over-30 club in 2006, when he single-handedly held the Ravens back with his awful 3.6 per-carry average -- and this behind a legitimately good offensive line. Of course, 3.6 was an upgrade compared to his 3.4 average in 2005.

Put a good running back on the 2006 Ravens and they probably would be designing Super Bowl rings right now.

So, of course, who would want Lewis but the Cleveland Browns, who are to running the ball what Charlie Brown is to kicking it.

Over the past five years, here are the Browns' ranks in yards-per-carry: 29th, 22nd, 27th, 15th, 24th. I guess when you've had guys like Lee Suggs, William Green and Travis Prentice as your leading rushers, Jamal Lewis looks like a step up.

The Browns might have an improved offensive line, with the return of LeCharles Bentley from injury and the addition of Eric Steinbach in free agency. But unless Lewis discovers the fountain of speed in the offseason, I don't think it'll amount to much.

Borges, plus original football writing

Ron Borges didn't commit crimes against humanity, but ...

I used to be a sports editor of a daily newspaper, and it pisses me off that he gives sportswriters a bad name they mostly don't deserve.

I like Ron personally, but he should have known better for many reasons -- including the fact that maybe no sports writer in American history has been so scrutinized. In New England, he has legions of haters that track his every move. Duh! How could he think no one would pick this up?

Anyway, he probably deserved the suspension, and I hope he comes back to the job with some renewed energy for a job most of us would kill for.

Now let's never speak of it again.

On to football!

1. If the Falcons don't sign Joe Horn, they have no idea what they're doing. According to reports (ones that i didn't write and won't pass off as my own), the Falcons are Horn's first choice. What an amazingly perfect fit for the ATL -- a veteran receiver that is still damn good. Durability is an issue (9 games missed last 2 years), but Horn averaged almost 70 yards a game in 2006 (which projects to 1,120 yards for 16 games. Plus, he's a leader. You're on the clock, Falcons.

2. Why are all the good white receivers on the free-agent market? Drew Bennett goes to the Rams, where Kevin Curtis used to be (and is visiting the Vikings). Wes Welker is worth a second-rounder to the Patriots. And just for spice, Brandon Stokley and Sean Morey are available too. Am I missing anybody? What in the name of Steve Largent is going on here? There haven't been this many white receivers in the spotlight since "Invincible" was released in theaters.

3. The Broncos are brilliant, part two. They trade Tatum Bell (and joggin George Foster) for Dre Bly, then sign Travis Henry -- a big upgrade -- to be their RB. Nice move, especially for Henry, who could be a 1,500-yd back in 2007.

4. Another city for Brad Johnson. I like the Cowboys' signing of Johnson, even though I wanted to personally punch him in the face for fooling the Vikings into thinking he was still a legitimate starter. He was awful for my Vikes last year. But he's a great backup, smart and still with some skills left -- and with the Cowboy offense, he'd probably be decent.

5. Speaking of the Vikings. Good job, guys! You have a load of cap room, and so far you signed TE Vicanthe Sciancoe. Did I spell that right? Who cares! Get a good skill player, you assholes!

6. Patrick Kerney? Zzzzzzzz. The Seahawks spent big bucks on Kerney, who's 30 and has 11 sacks in his last two seasons (missed seven games in 2006). I'm not feeling it. But he's definitely better than me, especially at football.

7. There's no "T" in team. Now that the Patriots have Kyle Brady in camp, will Tom Brady be "T. BRADY" on his jersey and Kyle Brady be "K. BRADY"? Or will Kyle get a K. and Tom stay the same? Oh, the horror.

8. Comeback Player of the Year 2007: Daunte Culpepper. Yes, I do have a Culpepper jersey and MacFarlane figure. But that doesn't make my biased. Oh, maybe it does. Either way, I like Big Teal's chances next year -- in his poor 2006 stint with Miami, he had no mobility, but the same arm and intensity. A healthy Culpepper will be a big boost for the Dolphins. That's all I'm saying. And while the Dolphins are exploring their options, how about trading for Randy Moss. LET'S PUT THE BAND BACK TOGETHER!!!!!!!

To the Globe,

The paper must make it clear that intellectual integrity still has a home on Morrisey Boulevard. The disclaimer at the end of the "notes columns"cannot be used to shield the wholesale lifting of another reporter's work. The crime may well not rise to the level of plagiarism, but laziness and stupidity on the part of the reporter and editors for allowing this sort of thing must be dealt with. At a minimum, a public apology and some time on the bench for Mr. Borges would sound good if tied to a clearly articulated statement by the paper regarding these columns.

You folks took away my favorite writer when Barnacle was shown the door and you were right for doing so after his multiple offenses. Please show intellectual integrity in this case and do so in a public way. Only then can the public continue to have faith in the Globe.

For the past several years, I've been on the brink of cancelling my decades-long subscription to The Globe, largely based on the continual decline in quality of sports coverage. The latest from Ron Borges has now pushed me over the brink. It's one thing to be clearly biased, it's yet another to be a plagerizer, and that's what Mr. Borges is.

He can come up with all the excuses he wants, but at reputable publications there is no true excuse for Mr. Borges literally cutting and pasting another writer's work without attribution, and you all know this to be true. Ron Borges should be fired, but I expect he will not be, and I will become what I never believed possible: A Herald subscriber.

You owe it to your readers to take corrective action.

His latest attempt at a column this weekend in which he absolutely contradicts himself with what he said on Friday is ridiculous. With the news of him Plagiarizing other columnists I strongly suggest going in another direction with your columnists'. I would like to say that Mike Reiss has done a tremendous job and feel he is the only person that can be relied on for sports news from your newspapper. OK, this is right from the chief troll ... it's not one of those letters to us and to the Globe, like all those posted below.

Here goes:

I talked on the phone today to a sports-industry insider about the Ron Borges incident, after he contacted us via e-mail.

He did not want us to use his name, but apparently knows both Borges and Tacoma News Tribune reporter Mike Sando fairly well. We’re familiar with this individual’s work and have every reason to believe he’s on the up and up with his information.

Basically, he thinks we’re unfair to Borges, and wants us to know that there’s a very good explanation for how un-attributed copy was lifted from a previously published column and found its way into a Boston Globe column, virtually verbatim.

(For the record, we despise unnamed sources. It’s not our style. It’s an easy-way-out employed mostly by big-media hot-shots. But we’re using one here, if only because the source is critical of us. We wouldn’t bludgeon others with un-named sources. That’s a Borges technique).

In any case, our source said there are private media forums out there for exchanging content. Sando and Borges both participate in one of these private media forums. Apparently, it’s understood that information that appears in this forum is open for use by any other participant – at least according to this source.

He says that he knows that Sando published his Feb. 25 column in this forum and that the assumption for other forum participants, such as Borges, was that it was free for him to use.

Our contact actually blamed Sando for publishing his entire piece verbatim in this exchange of ideas, rather than summarizing it.

He acknowledged that Borges “made two, maybe three mistakes” in this incident, “but that he was much as victim as anything.”

This version may very well be the truth. There’s no reason to doubt that this contact is sharing accurate information.

But it doesn’t pass muster with us. Nor will it with you.

You can’t just lift un-attributed copy from another outlet, slap your name on top of it and pass it off was your own.

Maybe it’s just us.

We do know this: the ONLY people to go to bat for this practice are folks in the media. To everybody else, it’s wrong. Plain and simple.

As for the charge that we're unfair to Borges, we have to respectfully declare that any such charge is bullshit.

We published links to two different articles that offered the same exact content. That's not unfair ... that's called honest reporting.

Apparently, there's not much of it going around these days. So when people see it on Cold, Hard Football Facts.com, they're somewhat shocked.

Good afternoon:

As a 35 year Patriots season ticket holder I am an ardent reader of the Boston Globe and have thoroughly enjoyed the sports pages of the Globes my whole life and not only football but all of the sports. I think Mike Reiss is a great young writer and reporter and his blog is the first item I bring up when I go on the computer to check on my favorite team. He always seems to be ahead of the curve and is highly informative with the proper perspective that Patriots fans are looking for.

My friends and I have commented many times lately that Michael Felger of the Herald has become more negative and looking for ways to attack the Patriots management and we laughingly say "he is trying to become a mini Borges". He is starting to turn us off, which Borges had done 4-5 years ago. Which brings me to my point. Sunday morning I got up early and on to my computer to read about the Patriots big free agent splash of Saturday and went first to Mike Reiss's article in the Globe and then to the Herald and then on to all the major web football sites.

I then went and read the Globe obituaries and after getting a little depressed I went to Ron Borges Sunday article "On Football" as is my normal custom to get a good laugh and remove my depression. This had to be the absolutely worst column I have ever read by him as it was so slanted to take away from a Patriots fan's enjoyment because of his so obvious bias against Belichek and so contradictory to what he had written previously about Adalius Thomas and his abilities.

I also had heard him on Felger's show talk about Thomas in glowing terms and comment that the Patriots would never make an effort to get him. I think I spent about 2 hours talking to friends about what a jerk he is and how we all should stop reading his articles as it is not worth looking for information from someone who has such an agenda and will spin his stories to make the Patriots look bad.

So now I read about how he plagiarized a portion of his column from a writer in Tacoma Washington and fully realize that he has gone over the edge. I also have heard that the AFC source he was quoting in knocking Thomas was that high character loser of a coach, Marvin Lewis. He really knows how to bring in quality players.

I know this will not happen, but I feel that a very high quality newspaper like the Boston Globe should not have a person like this writing for them and urge you to disassociate yourselves from any further services with Borges. I will never read another article written by Borges or watch him on Folger's FSN TV show.

I don't need to be lied to by a person like this, as sports is for my enjoyment, not to make me angry. He has gone past laughing at and is the worst columnist I have seen in Boston in my 58 years of watching and reading about Boston sports when my father introduced me to the Red Sox, Braves, and Celtics at the age of 6. All the great columnists that have come out of the Globe (Gammons, Montville, Ryan, Edes, McDonough, Holly, Cefardo, Reiss) must be ashamed that Borges is allowed to write for the same great paper.

Finally, this week we find that Ron Borges is a plagiarist. For years any astute sports fan has been aware that Borges writes solely to satisfy his own needs. As a regular reader I was amazed that the Globe management have defended Borges in the way they have (it's opinion, he's supposed to be controversial…etc). These defenses were always hollow. As a Boston Globe subscriber from Hanover, MA., I'm writing this email to you in order to express my outrage at the numerous acts of plagiarism committed by Ron Borges. The most recent examples of his "work" in stealing verbatim text from a writer in Seattle WA. (Mike
Sando) exceed in any measurable way the boundaries of ethical journalism and I believe reflect very poorly upon your newspaper.

As you are aware, this is merely the latest in a long string of inconsistencies associated with Mr. Borges, who often times states one opinion in your newspaper and at the same times states a diametrically opposite opinion in another forum - radio interview or Internet outlet.
An example of this can be found as recently as this past Friday (March
2nd) when Mr. Borges stated that then Baltimore Ravens linebacker Adalius Thomas was his #1 choice for best value player and was destined to make an impact on whatever team drafted him (paraphrased).

Two days later in the Sunday Globe, he questions whether or not Thomas is good enough to play for the Patriots.

Another example of of his inconsistency is your publication of his football "picks". He picks one
group of selections for the Globe and selects different teams for other outlets. When confronted with this issue, Mr. Borges responded on a local radio show (ESPN-Boston) that he doesn't even make the picks for the Globe - he said an intern does.

Either way, this places his credibility firmly in question and makes me wonder what else is being misrepresented at your newspaper.

His lack of objectivity is annoying to say the least, and in my opinion believe that your newspaper will be a far better publication when Ron Borges is fired. If the Boston Globe is to maintain any level of credibility, you must terminate him immediately - to do any less would
be a disservice to your other fine writers and to your readers who have every right to expect that what they read every day in the Globe is accurate, unbiased, and original.

As an avid Patriots and Red Sox fan I've been rather surprised by the tone and reporting style of Boston Globe local sports coverage over the years. And at times I have been disgusted by said reporting. Ron Borges, in particular, is such an anomoly in quality, style and tone that I cannot read his articles anymore. You have a right to continue to employ him. And I can choose to ignore his work as I do not think it provides an acurate picture of the teams he covers and, thus, is not in the least bit informative.

Though I have questioned the quality of his work before I did not suspect him of plagiarism. I guess I assumed that though I did not find the Globe sports coverage informative. It was still held to appropriate journalistic standards. Seeing the infomation below posted on the Cold Hard Football facts website makes the charge of plagiarism in this instance very strong.

I am not a journalist but would very much like to know how and why the article written by Ron Borges in his football notes column on 3/4/07 does not constitute plagiarism. It seems clear to me that it is a shocking and straight forward example of plagiarism. In which case it is more then enough cause to terminate Borges' employment with the Globe.

Hopefully, Globe leadership is already evaluating this issue and will take swift action. If he is not terminated over this offense, though, I would really appreciate an explanation as to why/how this does not qualify as plagiarism.

I'm a Seahawks fan and Sando is a top notch reporter for our team. He is my source for everything. He obviously works his tail off, as evidenced in his blog. You can ask him questions near real time and get responses. He's got a connection to the fans. I don't know him personally, never met him. But I'd go to bat for this guy. His work speaks for itself.

The fact that Borges is stealing his work is terribly offensive. Sando works for a small publication, and I'm guessing it's by choice because he has the ethic to move ahead. A big body like the Boston Globe should discipline harshly... Borges should never write under your name again. I couldn't get away with this much plaguirism in high school and Borges is pulling it off under a major publisher. An apology is in order to Mr. Sando.

I like Mr. Broges and his columns, and I feel that he often brings balance to the Globe's sports coverage. I applaud him for playing "Devil's Advocate" and representing less popular opinions when necessary. This is why it saddens me so that a talented writer like Mr. Borges would lift almost an entire article from another writer. I do not believe that the disclaimer at the end of his March 4, 2007 article "Seahawk is a Better Catch" is sufficient to excuse his line-for-line replication of Mike Sando's February 25, 2007 article "Seahawks Intend to Shop Jackson" in the Tacoma News Tribune.

I used to receive the Globe at home, and now buy the Monday-Friday editions at a newsstand on the way to work. I normally would not have seen this particular article, but I was intrigued by the coverage of this was receiving on WEEI and decided to take a look for myself. I urge you to do the same, and to do the right thing, and protect the integrity of the Boston Globe, the most beloved and respected paper in the region. Mr. Borges must face serious (and public) reprimand at the very least, but due to his unfortunate unpopularity, it may be better for him to move on altogether.

Borges' off the charts bloated ego has finally caused his down fall as everyone without his blinding arrogance knows that you cant get away with blatant plaigerism in this day and age. He does not want to get fired, he is just tired and lazy and feels "entiltled." I always harken back to the glee he displayed upon the death of Will McDonough as he couldnt wait to have a HOF vote.

Borges suffers from the same inflated feeling of self worth that we saw from well known Mass Dems such as Flaherty and Finneran and he needs to share the same fate. Get rid of him...

The only reason I have continued to buy the paper is for the sports section, but now even your sports reporting has been corrupted. I cannot believe that Ron Borges will still be working for you any more.

You fired Mike Barnicle for making up stories to enhance a point but surely the wholesale copying of someone else's work without giving credit is worse than that. Ron has consistently written disparaging pieces about the Patriots and has alluded to a personal vendetta against Bill Belichick to the point that I no longer read his work because I disagree so strongly with his continually negative slant.

This however represents an editorial choice that I have to respect as it is a valid point of view, even if I disagree with it. Wholesale plagiarsm is in an entirely different category and is surely one that will not be tollerated by The Globe. Ron's Sunday Football notes column is plagarism of an article written in the Tacoma News Tribune on Feb 25th pure and simple. Please, enough is enough, its time for Ron to go.

As a regular reader of the Tacoma News Tribune, Seahawks Insider Blog, I’m offended at the March 4th "Football Notes" article. The similarities between the discussion of the Seahawks’ Darrell Jackson situation in the March 4th "Football Notes" article bear an uncanny resemblance to the work of Mike Sando of the Tacoma News Tribune on February 25th, 2007,

Firstly, I’d expect a journalist for a paper as esteemed as the Boston Globe to behave more responsibly. Secondly, Mr. Borges’ lapse in judgment is perhaps more egregious as to cleave the credit for the work from the very hard-working, oft-blogging Mike Sando of the less heralded, but well regarded, Tacoma News Tribune.

I’m hoping the proper steps are taken to rightly attribute much of the work for the article to Mr. Sando, and I should think that Mr. Sando and your readers deserve some assurances that this event will not be repeated.

I am a subscriber and reader of The Boston Globe. I believe it is a newspaper of great character and quality reporting. This is why I believe that The Boston Globe should remove from its staff sportswriter Ron Borges.

Mr. Borges has committed in the past several questionable actions which have prompted complaints. But now, he stands accused of a highly damaging charge in the world of journalism -- plagiarism. It is clear that Mr. Borges lifted whole sections of a Feb. 25 column by Mike Sando of The News Tribune of Tacoma and used them in his March 4 "Football notes" column.

I demand as a reader of the Globe sports page that only those that follow the rules of journalism be allowed to write for this publication. Mr. Borges does not meet these standards and he must be released immediately from the Globe staff. As a veteran of three Scripps Howard newspapers (the now-defunct El Paso Herald Post, the Knoxville News-Sentinel and the [Denver] Rocky Mountain News), I can't see how Ron Borges should escape punishment after his blatant plagiarism of Mike Sando's March 4 article for the (Tacoma, Wash.) News Tribune.

I don't know Mr. Borges, nor had I ever noted his name until tonight, as far as I can recall. I am, however, very familiar with the good name of the Boston Globe, and I don't see how you can allow Mr. Borges to lessen your good name with his unprofessional conduct.

Wow. The Steelers cut Joey Porter loose for cap reasons Thursday.

This is nothing new for the Steelers, who treat 30-year-old linebackers like clingy hookers: by kicking them the hell out. Greg Lloyd, Kevin Greene, Levon Kirkland -- they all got the boot.

Porter will get paid somewhere, for sure -- I'd take an angry Joey Porter for a year or two, no problem. With all the money out there this year, he'll do fine.

Also, the Saints cut Joe Horn, another veteran getting the gate. Check out Horn's quotes:

"Right now it's going around that (the Saints) wanted to restructure my contract and I asked to be released, but this has nothing to do with money," Horn said told The Fayetteville (N.C.) Observer. "I wanted to retire as a Saint. I've been through hell and back for that city and that organization. If I wanted out of New Orleans that bad, I would have just kept my mouth shut and let them move the team to San Antonio.

"I just don't think [coach] Sean Payton wanted me back. I asked to be released because I felt betrayed by a head coach who wanted to prove he could win without Joe Horn."

Ouch. Horn was having a big year for the Saints while healthy, and he's another guy that will provide big value for 1-2 years.

Broncos-Lions trade

According to SI.com, the Broncos will trade T George Foster, RB Tatum Bell and a fifth-round pick to the Lions for Dre Bly.

Interesting move. Bly is still kinda sorta considered a top notch corner, and if he's good the Broncos could be scary in the secondary with Bly and Bailey.

Clinton Portis for Bailey, Bell/Foster for Bly. Probably both steals. I don't think Bell is a star in the making, and the Broncos had soured on Foster.

Give the Broncos credit for their willingness to make ballsy moves -- there's a reason they're good every year.

Also on the Broncos, the fact that they had two young players die in the first two months of the offseason is just bizarre and terrible. One Bronco, WR Brandon Marshall, was with Darrent Williams when he was killed and also was with RB Damien Nash when he died of a heart problem. What a horrible burden to bear.

I've always been kind of a Bronco hater, but something like that makes you realize that hate is kind of a stupid emotion to have for a football team.

Anyway, in doing some research for an upcoming CHFF piece, I came across a cool story on former NFL safety Jake Scott (Super Bowl MVP with the Dolphins during undefeated season).

I know that Jake Scott might not be the most compelling subject to read a lengthy feature on, but this is a cool one. STORY! STORY! RIGHT CLICK, OPEN IN NEW WINDOW!

The Jake Scott-related CHFF story we're working on, BTW, is about the most deserving defensive players that aren't in the Hall.

It's a good piece. To sum it up, let me say that the collective members of the Hall of Fame committee know more about football than I'll ever know. That being said, we are going to make them look very bad.

I was six when I first fell for football, and I loved the Seahawks. This lasted until I was 13 or so, and I've bounced around to a few favorite teams since -- kind of the Andre Rison of NFL fans.

I used to love their punter, Herman Weaver, mostly because of his name and because he seemed like a nice guy. Like I say, I was six, so I hadn't quite mastered the game yet.

That's my story, I'm sticking to it.

Shula's Steakhouse ... with recipes!

Steak with the Shulas

The Shulas just opened a new Shula's 347 Grill in Providence, R.I. and had a little media dinner last night (the "official" grand opening is tonight). I'm writing a story about the place for The Boston Herald (it will be in tomorrow's food section) and got a chance to have dinner with Don Shula and his son, David.

The food's great and the Herald will have that angle. But, of course, I was very excited to talk to the Shulas about football. Don was just a real cool, down-to-earth dude. We talked about Paul Brown (the subject of a major CHFF piece last month) and Shula's days coaching with Blanton Collier, the highly successful Brown coaching disciple.

"The guy who had the biggest influence on my career was Blanton Collier," said Shula.

Of course, as CHFF readers know (but few others), Collier is one of the most succesful coaches ever, despite his low name recognition. He has the fourth best winning percentage in NFL history -- one spot ahead of Shula on the all-time list. It was Collier who hired Shula as an assistant when he was coaching at the University of Kentucky.

But it all stemmed from the legendary Paul Bown, said Shula. "When I played (college football) at John Carroll, we had the Paul Brown playbook," he said. "That was the basis for my coaching career."

For the record, Shula is almost exactly 40 years older than me, but I'm fairly certain he could kick my ass. Real good shape for a guy his age. His wife is smoking, too. In fact, she could probably kick my ass.

I sat next to David Shula during the dinner and basically chatted about football and occasionally about food. David played football at Dartmouth and spent a year playing for the Colts before entering the coaching ranks. He didn't have quite the same success as his dad, winning just 19 of 71 games in four-and-a-half years heading the Bengals in the mid-1990s.

He was just 32 when he took over the Bengals in 1992. Today, he's 47 and runs the family's fairly lucrative restaurant business. The Providence location is the 26th restaurant in their chain.

Don was wearing one of his Super Bowl rings and when I asked which one it was, he said, "which one do you think?" - Yup, the undefeated 1972 season SB ring.

Previously this ad had been about football and shit, so this is an odd turn. I think how it works is that certain key words are pulled out by the computer and that determines what ad goes there.

Sharon Stone won the infamous "Razzie" award for worst actress this weekend, and there's good reason -- no legitimate movie star has ever been in a worse string of movies than this no-talent nut job.

On the Internet Movie Database, each movie gets a ranking based off user reviews. It's not perfect, but gives an idea. It breaks down like this:

8.0 or above: all-time great
7-8: pretty damn good
6-7: good
5-6: subpar
under 5.0: terrible.

Here's how Sharon Stone's career breaks down:

These numbers are unheard of. I looked at a bunch of other movie stars, and no one even came close to her in terms of total ineptitude.

The Toronto Bills ... from a reliable source

This is an e-mail making the rounds out of Buffalo ... you know, it comes from a friend of a friend ... of a friend.

And we all know how reliable that guy is.

In case you're not familiar with Buffalo social circles (and lucky for you if you're not), Tom Golisano is the owner of the Sabres, the gazzillionare who ran Paychex, and a perennial loser in the NY governor's race.

Here's the scoop ... you know, from a friend of a friend of a friend:

This guy I work with let me in on some information about the Bills future in WNY. Apparently, this person was at a dinner meeting with Tom Golisano in early September in Buffalo. At this meeting Golisano dropped a bombshell about the nefarious Ralph Wilson.

Golisano claims that Wilson's intentions all along have been to move the Bills to Toronto. Stay with me on this......there are businessmen in Toronto that are ready to plunk down mega-millions for the Bills and move them there. Wilson already let the NFL know of this (Apparently they can't stop him either).

Golisano & the people from Rich Products offered Wilson a similar financial package but Wilson demurred....when they offered him more, he demurred again...& said he wouldn't sell the team to them no matter how much they offered; it's not about money. Wilson wants it to be his legacy that he be the first person to bring international play to the NFL.

Still with me..? There's more.... Not to be dismayed, TG went to the NFL & has an agreement that when the Bills move, they cannot take their name with them, ala Baltimore Colts/Ravens.

After the move to TO, Buffalo will be granted an expansion franchise with the promise that they build a new stadium & sell it out for 5 consecutive years. (The NFL wants a franchise in Buffalo because it's one of the original teams & has history in the league) TG agreed to do this & will build a DOMED stadium on the waterfront in Buffalo with a capacity of 60,000. In addition, Buffalo will be granted a Super Bowl in the future.

The caveat to this is that Buffalo will be without a football team for 3-4 years. The wheels are already in motion & no one can stop it. TG says that RW is playing the game right now..ie: crying the blues about money, saying enjoy the team while it's here, not signing/keeping star players, etc.

Next year or possibly the year after the Bills will be gone. Willis McGahee may have let the cat out of the bag with his recent TO talk in Penthouse. Star players don't want to come to B-lo because they know RW is a tight ass. TG also said that if he ran the team he will not be such a cheapskate & would turn things around in a hurry like he did with the Sabres. Now I realize how all this sounds & you probably let out a big laugh & said "bullshit" but this guy has no reason to lie to me. (I can read people pretty well too) I don't say much to him when I see him other than "hi."

We just happened to be proctoring an exam together yesterday when we started talking about sports. This guy is a sports nut who travels all over the country for various sporting events. We must expose the walking corpse that is Ralph Wilson. Send this to everyone you know & encourage people to call radio shows & expose this true. We may not be able to stop it, but we can let him know we will not be fooled & bamboozled. And when he dies, which I hope is VERY SOON; we can all fly to Detroit & take a big piss on his grave..... Remember....you heard it here first....

Aaron Brooks, the New Jeff George

If you were Aaron Brooks in the winter of 2003, you were a happy guy.

You were one of the NFL's brightest stars -- at 27, you had been a four-year starter with a playoff win and 11 fourth-quarter comebacks.

And going 3-13 in 2005 with NO and 0-9 with Oakland in 2006 confirmed that. I think he's a guy like Jeff George, who had all of the tools but not enough heart.

I'd be happy enough to be proven wrong about Brooks some day -- he's a nice man who helps children and charities -- but somehow I doubt it will happen.

Football or freakshow?

I don't want to get overly serious here, which is why I attach the picture of a monkey smoking a cigarette.

But the "celebrity" area of the NFL is creepy, and something that I wish would go away.

I thought us football fans, dumb as we are, would be above that shit.

I mean, have you ever watched "Extra" or "Entertainment Tonight"? If there is a better argument out there for serial killing, I don't know what it is. Why did Jeffrey Dahmer kill gay drifters when he could have disemboweled Mary Hart?

Celebrity culture is disgusting, and the less it comes into play in my beloved NFL, the better.

Celebrity is a drug, one of the worst ones out there. Look at what it did to Britney Spears. If she had bypassed a singing career and just started hooking at 16, she'd probably be in a similar spot at 25 -- strung out, with two fatherless kids,

It's sad, and although I would still probably do her in a desert island situation, my erotic thrusting would be tinged with regret and an air of depression.

Unlike Britney, Tom Brady has been able to avoid the drugs and weirdness that many famous folks are hit with, but we have found his weakness: celebrity tail.

Brady was crying out for a simple, down-home girl, but he wound up with actress/model types. And now, he's got to deal with a tough situation in the public spotlight. Knowing Brady, he'll turn it into a positive -- and a child, even one out of wedlock, is a positive. Brady will surely discover that soon.

All the "aw man, he gets to bang models!" stuff is predictable, but remember, no matter how beautiful a woman is there's someone who's so fucking sick of all her bullshit.

Anyway, good luck Tom. I'm sure you're looking forward to training camp to take your mind off all of this.

Quarterback, half-drunk, full advantage

The life of an NFL quarterback doesn't suck.

Not only do you play football for a living, but you enjoy the benefits of stardom. For bachelors (and those with permissive wives), parties and hotties come with the package. Super Bowls often have as well.

We previously discussed how QBs who play the field have had considerable success on it. Many have also taken full advantage of their single status by dating celebrities (although that perk isn't limited to quarterbacks).

Three-time champ Tom Brady of the Patriots is a prime example. A few months ago, he broke off a three-year relationship with smokin' actress Bridget Moynahan. She now claims to be pregnant with his child. Brady hasn't yet responded to the revelation because he has been vacationing in Europe with his new girlfriend, supermodel Giselle Bundchen.

Several of today's other young quarterbacks seem to be doing alright for themselves -- especially if these pictures are any indication. From top to bottom, that's Matt Leinart of the Cardinals, Eli Manning of the Giants, and Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers. They all look pretty lit-up, but the chicks seem to be digging them.

So, in honor of Mardi Gras, we ask two questions: Which bachelor QB would be the most fun to party with? And who is able to pull the best wool?

Riley Odoms for the Hall of Fame!

Who is Riley Odoms?

Why, he's a should-be-Hall of Famer! At least if the recent election of Charlie Sanders is any indication.

I previously made the case for Sanders as the worst Hall of Famer ever, and will reinforce that notion by showing that the immortal Riley Odoms was a better player.

If none of this rings a bell, both players were good tight ends in the NFL.

Sanders played 10 full years (1968-77) for the Lions, Odoms played 10 full years (1972-1981) for the Broncos.

Here are their 10-year numbers:

Odoms: 384 catches, 5,511 yards, 41 TDs. 4 Pro Bowl selections

Sanders: 336 catches, 4,817 yards, 31 TDs, 7 Pro Bowl selections.

OK. Who had the better career? I'd probably take Odoms, who was on some very good Bronco teams, over Sanders -- who made the playoffs once (and saw his Lions get shutout).

But clearly, neither guy was a Hall of Famer. I'm still trying to figure out how Sanders could get in, even as an old timer. If anyone has a clue, please let me know.

Brady Should've Covered Up

Now that we've all had the weekend to let the news sink in, it might be reasonable at last to raise questions about Tom Brady's judgement.

Perhaps it was a momentary lapse, like forcing the ball into Champ Bailey's coverage on 3rd down in the red zone during last years Divisional Playoff. Maybe he just misread the situation, like when he didn't notice an uncovered Reche Caldwell in this season's AFC Championship Game.

But whatever happened, we can all agree that Brady forgot the quarterback's prime directive: don't make any stupid mistakes that will cost you.

You're the 29 year old bright, shining center of the sports galaxy. Your girlfriend is more famous for dating you than any of her movie roles, unless "I, Robot" has some huge cult following we've missed. And at 36 years old, her biological clock was tolling louder than Big Ben. No dummy herself, she had to know she was starting to get competition from a certain world-class lingerie model.

A QB of Brady's experience should have read the looks Moynahan was giving him in that situation and made the only intelligent call:

But, there's really no doubt that Turner is a top-notch NFL coach. He's been an assistant or head coach for 16 seasons, and while it hasn't all been peaches and cream it's been at least decent.

His record as an offensive coordinator is clearly better than his head coaching record, but at this point in the game he was the safest pick in the universe. He's got the experience, and he's never had the talent (as a head coach at least) like he's going to have in San Diego.

And after watching the Raiders play football under Art Shell this year, Turner's two-year stint in Oakland starts to look like a smashing success.

Call him a two-time loser if you want, but don't expect a third losing stint this time around. Not a sexy choice, but for a team that's ready to win a Super Bowl, probably the right choice.

Samuel Gets Franchised

The New England Patriots have announced that they are putting the Franchise Tag on CB Asante Samuel, which at minimum will keep Samuel with the team through the 2007 season for guaranteed $7.79 million.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter broke the story, and immediately jumped to the conclusion that the move "sets the stage for another ugly mess between the Pats and one of the team's key players." A reasonable assumption, given the fact that Samuel's agent Alonzo Shavers made it clear that his client wouldn't be real happy if the team tagged him. No one should expect any other reaction from a guy who has a tattoo that says "Get Paid."

But a funny thing happened. Shavers and Samuel are both OK with this development. They released a statement Friday night saying "We don't look at it as a bad thing. This is a step in the process in working toward a long term deal." So what we've got here is a player agent having a reasonable, thoughtful reaction to a team using its collectively bargained leverage to keep a player that was about to cash in on his first big contract...Expect Congress to convene an emergency session to declare this a national holiday.

The big winner here is Buffalo's Nate Clement. Samuel is not the player Clement is, but he was the only free agent CB on the market in Clement's class. The price of poker on top CB's just went waaay up.

Brady Quinn: Bust?

I love it when this stuff happens.

Notre Dame QB Brady Quinn, who hasn't thrown a pass in anger in two months, is all of a sudden a shitty player.

The Sporting News has a story out (right click to open in new screen) claiming that anonymous scouts say Quinn is a third- or fourth-round talent, and is the "biggest fraud in the draft." They compare him to Joey Harrington.

That's not good for Quinn, but I'm not buying it.

Scott Wright, who is probably the best web source for draft news, has Quinn as the No. 1 prospect, and why not?

Here are Brady's numbers from 2005-06: 63.3 percent completion, 8.1 yards per attempt, and the kicker:

14 INTERCEPTIONS.

Folks, that's a 5-to-1 TD to INT ratio, and that's not commonplace -- especially when you're playing for a top-notch Division 1 team. Add the pro seasoning of playing under Charlie Weis, and Quinn as a bust just doesn't add up.

Rick Mirer, who got himself drafted No. 1 from ND 15 years ago, threw 33 TDs and 15 INTs his final 2 years.

Even Peyton Manning, who left college ball with the best INT-per-pass of all time, threw 23 INTs and 57 TDs his final two seasons.

I know college numbers don't always translate, but unless Weis is the greatest coach in the history of the world, Quinn is pretty damn good.

As a Vikings fan, I can only hope he slips to No. 7. Ah hell, the Vikings would probably be too dumb to take him anyway.

Cowher Gets a Job

CBS announced today that recently resigned Steelers head coach Bill Cowher will be joining The NFL on CBS as a studio analyst.

Before you break out the champagne, ask Nana to watch the kids and call the neighbors to come over and celebrate because you think The Chin will be replacing the indecipherable Shannon Sharpe or the opinionless, analysis-challenged Dan Marino, know thee this: Cowher isn't replacing anyone.

CBS is going with five guys at the desk. Read that again. Let it sink in. Five guys. F-I-V-E.

Is that possible? Can it be done? I mean, isn't the number of football analysts allowed in the studio set in stone? Isn't it some divine law like Ten Commandments, Seven Deadly Sins, Twelve Apostles or how much you count to when you're using the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch? "Thou shalt count to three. Thou shalt not count to four. Nor shalt thou count to two, unless thou then proceedth to three. Five is right out..."

Frankly I'm frightened and distrubed by this news. You just don't mess with Nature's Laws like this. Four guys in a studio. Joe, Terry, Jimmy and Howie. Boomer, TJ, Michael and Steve. Jim, Dan, Boomer and Shannon.

To try adding a fifth guy to an NFL studio is like a Jedi flying solo ("Always two there are") or forming a boy band with something other than five members...it's messing with things that ought not to be messed with. Hopefully this won't break the Seventh Seal or something.

What coach wouldn't want to coach the San Diego Chargers?

Now, there are a few problems out there -- the Chargers were probably the second-most felonious team in the league last year, but the Bengals stole all their thunder.

Other than that, it's scary -- they've got the best offensive player in the league in LT and maybe the best defensive player too in Merriman. And they're both young.

A coach would get to hire whoever he wanted (because there are no assistants left, basically), and you'd have to think that GM/dick A.J. Smith would make an effort to be nice.

Sick! I think a high school coach could conceivably win 10 games with this Charger team in 2007.

Here are five guys who should seriously consider this job.

1. John Madden. Wouldn't it be fun to see him on the sidelines, preferably in those tight old 70s shirts he used to wear? Bam!

2. Prince. Dearly beloved. We are gathered here today to ... KICK SOME FUCKIN' ASS AN TAKE NAMES! Awwww, think I wanna da-ance.

3. Bill Clinton. Great leader. If he could get us to believe he didn't fuck Monica Lewinsky, he could get the Chargers to the playoffs.

4. My Aunt Alison. She's a hearty football fan, and even though she doesn't know who plays what position (except for QB), she'd give it a good try. Plus, free sideline access for me.

5. Terrell Owens. Who wouldn't want to see T.O. as a player/coach? Yelling at himself, renaming the team "San Diego T.O.s," eventually killing a teammate/player. Good times.

Get a grip: Limbaugh was joking!

Rush Limbaugh made a joke the other day about the media being too hard on Rex Grossman "because he's white."

It was clearly a joke ... he was goofing on the media and their obsession with race. You could tell it was a joke just by looking at the text of it, but especially if you heard it.

Yet somehow it got turned into another "Limbaugh is a rascist" thing. Peter King even commented on it in is MMQB column in SI. He called Limbaugh a "race-aholic."

Clearly, King didn't listen to the segment ... I'm guessing he's never listened to Limbaugh and, like most Limbaugh critics, has no idea what the guy stands for and talks about. Yet King had the audacity , the sheer fuckin' gaul, to chastise Limbaugh for turning everything into a race issue.

Hey, I like King. He's good at what he does.

But this came from the same guy who spent the last three weeks talking about the race of the two coaches in the Super Bowl. There was even what I would define as an openly rascist quote from Andrea Kremer in one of his recent columns. She said she got goose bumps whe she saw two black coaches with the Lombardi trophy.

Clearly, they're the ones who see color first.

Hey, I get goose bumps when I hear MLK speeches .... but not because of the color of his skin, but because of his message.

It's funny that people who clearly never listen to someone like Limbaugh are so quick to judge him and others like him. Nothing like gathering all the facts first.

Free beer is the best

One of the best parts of running this shady operation out of the comfort of the Cold, Hard Football Facts .com cardboard-box world headquarters is that I routinely get free shipments of beer ... often from parts unknown.

Today, the folks from Sam Adams wanted me to check out their new lager glass ... intended to accentuate the various qualities of their American classic. Essentially, it looks like a combination pint class/Belgian tulip glass, with a mouth that rolls open and out. Glasses that open like that are supposed to accentuate the aroma of the beer, in this case the German hops.

There is something of a science to beer glassses, and different styles often have an optimum type of glassware. In Europe, especially in Germany and Belgium, every single beer brand seems to come with its own special glass.

I don't know if this glass makes Sam Lager taste any better ... but it's a neat one to add to the collection. (One of the few pieces of furniture in the cardboard-box HQ is a large cherry hutch filled with mugs, steins, krugs and glasses from breweries all over the world ... oh, sure, I could have invested our pan-handled earnings in a toilet or a bed, but then we'd have nowhere to put all the beer mugs.)

At the very least, you got admire folks who make an effort to create new ways to enjoy their beer.

One CHFF reader, Greg Ferrara, proposed an interesting theory about the Schottenheimer firing: San Diego management is so pissed that they're willing to spite themselves just to screw the coach. Here's his theory:

You wrote in your article about Marty Schottenheimer being canned: "Why did the Chargers wait so long to drop the big one?"

Well, the article itself answered the question. Schotzy was hated by A.J. Smith. Look at the last line of your article: "and nobody but San Diego right now is looking for a coach." The effer wanted to get rid of him AND make sure he wouldn't land another coaching job.

Screwing your own team out of a top coaching candidate just to make sure the guy your booting doesn't get hired. Holy crapola that's cold! And I thought it was always 74 and sunny in San Diego. I was in Buffalo last year for a Patriots-Bills game. We were driving down the street, through some real shitty neighborhood in Buffalo ... shittier than your average shitty Buffalo neighborhood.

We're driving past crack houses and strip joints before we realized we were going the wrong way. So we turn around in this warehouse district, and NO FUCKIN' SHIT: there's the Sausage Maker warehouse right in front of us.

If it wasn't like 3 degrees out, and it wasn't, like, midight and they were actually open, I would have went in and introduced myself as their most loyal customer.

Pigskin Depression

They need a name for the malaise, the borderline depression, that overcomes you at the end of the football season.

It really hit me yesterday when I had nothing to do on Sunday. Oh, sure, I could have gone out and experienced the world, tried new things, visited the gym, called up old friends.

But, really, all I wanted to do was watch football.

I'll come up with a name for this phenomenon soon.

It's worse in football, with its seven-month offseason, than it is in other sports. Hell, baseball barely even has an off-season. As I like to say, the boys of summer begin spring training in the dead of winter and play halfway into autumn.

Really, the only months without baseball are November, December and January. Baseball fans don't even have time to work up a depression ... plus, that's the height of football season anyway.

It's even worse if you're a college fan: three months (Sept., Oct., Nov.) that's really all you got and then, poof! It's gone for the rest of the year.

The college football season is quick and fleeting, but oh so delicious while it's here ... like a bowl of Buffalo wings.

Flags of our Fathers

First, I should say that the photo of the Marines in Iwo Jima is one of the few things that have ever moved me to the point of tears ... right up there with "Rudy."

And if it were up to me, the book "Flags of our Fathers" would be mandatory reading for every kid in America. Instead of brain-washing kids with the standard Noam Chomsky'"America sucks" fare of intellectually emtpy bullshit that passes for a college education, books like this might give kids a little perspective about their fat, cushy lives.

With that said, I meant to see the movie when it came out a few months back, but that would have involved leaving the cardboard-box world HQ during the football season.

So, I did go out and buy it Monday, the day it came out in DVD ... conveniently timed for the end of the football season.

The book is one of the greatest things ever written about WWII ... the story is compelling, of course, by itself. But it was also incredibly well told and powerful.

The movie?

Not so much.

I liked it, and glad I bought it, but there was no way they could tell the story of the book in a two-hour movie. That's often the case, but they didn't really capture much about the six individuals in the photo.

The book did a tremendous job bringing these six boys to life. That was the beauty of the book ... you felt like you knew the six kids in the photo. The movie glossed over it.

For example, one of the dramatic themes in the book is the fate of a guy named Iggy (a friend of John Bradley, one of the flag raisers and the father of the man who wrote the book). You find out what happened to him at the end of the book (kinda like the unveiling of "Snowden's secret" in Catch-22).

The movie never tells you what happened. In fact, it kinda gives a half-hearted effort to work Iggy into the script.

The movie does do a couple things well, like:

* showing the impact the photo had on the American public's view of the war ... which, by the way, most people were fed up with ... there's a feeling around today that WWII was somehow popular.

* showing what kind of dire financial straits the country was in toward the end of the war, and the difference between a democracy fighting a war and a dictatorship: the U.S. government basically had to beg Americans to fund the war, and the photo made it easy to do so.

* the actors look like kids, which is what they flag-raisers were. In a lot of old war movies, the actors they used were way to old -- think John Wayne in the Longest Day or the Green Berets. You get a feel in the movie for just how young these guys were.

* There's also a scene that takes place in a dark room where the photo, right after it was shot, comes to life before your eyes. It gave me the chills.

Bottom line: read the book, even if the movie didn't do it for you.
